Simply Living: A Maasai Homestay

Name: Inanna Carter
School: Harvard University
Major: Biological Sciences
Program: Wildlife Management Studies, Kenya

The Maasai homestay was an incredible learning opportunity and cultural experience. width=It was like living a day in another world. We herded baby goats and calves; we collected firewood, gathered water, smeared cow dung to fortify houses, made chai and ugali, and used sign language to communicate with our Maasai mama and her children. It was wonderful to interact with locals in a more natural setting, and to see the difference between their scale of living and ours. Most everything the traditional Maasai do is directly in tune with nature and therefore has an extremely small environmental footprint. We, as young Americans, could learn a lot from their efficiency. It reminds me of my favorite Mahatma Ghandi quote: “Live simply so that others may simply live.”
