On September 7, 2017, the Turks and Caicos Islands sustained a direct hit from Hurricane Irma. Most importantly, we have had confirmation that there was no loss of life or serious injury as a result of the storm. There is widespread damage to the local community, infrastructure, and environment. Due to the damage and burden on local resources across the Turks and Caicos, and particularly on South Caicos, we made the difficult decision to cancel the remainder of the Fall 2017 semester at our TCI center. This allows us to focus on rebuilding our Center and assisting in the recovery of the local community.
We have been receiving an outpouring of concern and well wishes from SFS alumni, parents, and sending institutions, and appreciate that SFS and the South Caicos community is in the thoughts of so many. To start the recovery process, we have established funds to aid in both the recovery of the local community and the rebuilding of our Center.
South Caicos Recovery Fund
To aid in the recovery of the local community, SFS has set up a fund designated for projects that will support the vitality of local livelihoods, ecosystems, and education systems on South Caicos. Our hope is that this fund will provide long-term support to supplement the initial assistance provided by disaster relief organizations.

SFS Center for Marine Resource Studies Re-Building Fund
Now more than ever, we want to continue our mission in the Turks and Caicos – educating students on marine studies and working in collaboration with our community partners to conserve marine resources and establish a sustainable economy for island residents. We have cancelled our Fall 2017 semester, but we want to get our Center up and running as soon as possible, and we can’t do so until we are able to re-build and repair our field station.

We appreciate whatever support you can give at this difficult time. Thank you for keeping SFS and the Turks and Caicos community in your hearts.
