Our courses are accredited through our School of Record (SOR), the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities (U of M). U of M utilizes the following criteria in determining the appropriateness of acting as SOR for a select number of educational partners:
All SFS courses—while often non-traditional in delivery –are developed and reviewed in accordance with our SOR and the Forum on Education Abroad’s Standards of Good Practice for Education Abroad.
Our School of Record conducts a thorough program review at one of our Centers every 5-7 years. This process includes a review of the history, mission, governing structure, academic policies, health and safety protocols, student participation information, as well as all information available to prospective, admitted, and enrolled students. Onsite at the Center, the review team meets with SFS faculty and staff, observes classes across the curriculum, participates in course field trips, and takes part in student meetings to gain additional feedback.
Our SOR joined us most recently in March 2017 at the SFS Center for Sustainable Development Studies in Costa Rica.
SFS recently created an Advisory Committee with the goal of upholding our longstanding record of academic quality in the rapidly changing field of environmental study abroad. Our goal for this committee is to incorporate a diverse set of viewpoints and insights into the evaluation and development of our programs, as well as advise on special projects such as increasing SFS’ diversity. The Committee is comprised of study abroad practitioners, faculty, the University of Minnesota, and SFS alumni working in the private sector, NGOs, and government.
