Final Impressions of SFS Turks & Caicos Islands

Turks and Caicos Islands

What did you like most about the SFS experience?
I loved the community that grew. From living together, and all the activities we did together, we really became a thriving family in a sense. Having that added to the entire experience. I also loved diving in the gorgeous Caribbean waters.

You’ve been in the country for a full semester – tell us your impressions of it now.
South Caicos is a complex, changing island that’s a part of a diverse group of islands that make up the TCI. South is a community-based island that is struggling to find a balance between its culture, economic needs, environmental sustainability, and the changing times. It has gorgeous flora and fauna, and incredibly high potential for a bright future.

What is life at the field station really like? What are the best and the most challenging parts of living at a remote field station?
As stated before, living at the field station created a great community. The best part of living here was being with your close friends every day. The most challenging part is not having alone time, because you are constantly surrounded by others.

What ended up being your biggest challenge this semester both academically and culturally?
Academically, my biggest challenge did end up being doing homework and focusing when it’s so beautiful out and there are so many fun things to do. Culturally, my biggest challenge was living in a place where women and animals are viewed much differently than in the United States.

What is the best memory you have from the semester? Give some highlights.
1)      Diving with a dolphin
2)      Being able to snorkel between classes
3)      Playing music on the public dock
4)      Playing with the local children at festivals in town

Give three adjectives that best describes how you are feeling right now.
Fulfilled, serene, nostalgic.
