Isla Popa Forest and La Loma Lodge

Panama

Isla Popa and La Loma Lodge are two very important areas to visit in the archipelago because they are surrounded by virgin forests in some places, as well as medicinal plants and organic crops. There are also animals that perform important processes within the ecosystem. For example, butterflies are vital for pollination and we also note that sloths are attractive to tourists.

The day we visited La Loma, I was very surprised to see so many plants and how they planted crops such as cocoa, bananas, cassava and bitter orange, which serves to nourish and maintain a healthy habitat. There are many trees that are not cut; I think that these trees should never be cut because they protect a beautiful creek. Our guide gave us some very important tips on how to handle cocoa, cassava, papaya and how they try not to cut native plants that also serve as medicinal and ornamental plants.

Henry and Margaret, owners of the lodge, have spent the past 14 years building the site and have kept it in its natural state in order to recover what at one time was lost. For a long time, this area was a pasture; now thanks to the care and interest of Henry and Margaret, it is almost fully recovered, which is very important in order for wildlife to come back to their habitat. Margaret spoke with students to explain the process of making chocolate and the importance of the plants they grow.

On another occasion, we visited Isla Popa 2, where a humble community is trying to make things better for all without damaging the surrounding ecosystem by avoiding cutting living trees. The community members work together to support themselves by selling tours in the jungle where giant native trees line a clean, smooth path where you can see various animals such as monkeys, sloths, frogs, snakes and the plants in the region, which are also medicinal. I think this place should be visited more often by more domestic and international tourists to support the livelihood of this community because it really is very difficult for them to find other work.

Although these two sites are managed by different people, one national and one international, both are doing excellent work to protect and maintain the resources of the area without sacrificing their livelihoods. The two sites need to become better known to discover and explore these two important points in the region of Bocas del Toro.
