Advising for SFS Programs

SFS Site Visits

Experience SFS Firsthand!

SFS site visits are an excellent opportunity to learn more about our programs. We typically offer one to two group visits a year and each visit includes an overview of the Center’s programs and research focus. Guests will meet our Center staff including the Center Director, faculty team, and support staff, and will head into the field to see key field sites used during the programs. Site visits are open to individuals who advise students for SFS programs which may include study abroad staff, academic advisors, and/or faculty members.

If you or one of your colleagues will be in-country and would like to arrange an individual site visit to an SFS Center, please reach out to sitevisit@fieldstudies.org for all inquiries.

Upcoming Site Visits

Kenya: May 14 - 21, 2024

To apply, please submit a Site Visit Application by January 15, 2024.

SFS has operated in Kenya for over 30 years and is a staple in the wildlife conservation community in the region. However, as the communities and environmental complexities evolve, so must SFS Kenya. In Fall 2023, SFS Kenya officially became The Center for Endangered Species Conservation. The site visit will showcase these exciting updates through a series of field excursions and disciplinary talks that examine approaches to conservation from both human and ecological lenses. The visit will take place Tuesday, May 14 – Tuesday, May 21, though please consider travel days to and from Kenya.

Academic themes will include:

  • Ecology of endangered wildlife
  • Human dimensions of endangered species conservation
  • Endangered species conservation strategies
  • Overview of the new excursion to Rwanda and our partnership with the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund

Field Excursions will likely include:

  • Visit to Amboseli National Park to observe magnificent megafauna and colorful birds
  • Visits to traditional and cultural Maasai Bomas
  • Kimana markets and town tour
  • Kimana Wildlife Sanctuary
  • Wildlife migratory corridors

LODGING: Visitors will reside in our shared student dorms and possibly in tents if we camp overnight. Single rooms are not available.

ACCESSIBILITY: We will spend significant time in the SFS vehicles when in national parks and sanctuaries. The site visit will require moderate physical activity, and we will be on our feet for long periods of time in the sun. Sports (volleyball, soccer, frisbee) can be enjoyed at the SFS Center.

$750 participation fee includes accommodations, site-visit activities, local transportation, and most meals. Site visitors are responsible for expenses related to international travel, immunizations, and personal spending.

Please direct any questions to sitevisit@fieldstudies.org.

We look forward to welcoming you to Kenya!
