PROGRAM Requirements
academic
SEMESTER: Fulfill one of the following:
- One semester of college-level Biology or Environmental Science/Studies. (Or Geology for Chile.)
- A 4 or a 5 on the AP Biology or AP Environmental Science exam.
- A score of 700 or above on the Bio SAT Il Subject Test.
- A 5-7 on a HL IB exam.
SUMMER: No course prerequisites.
GPA: A minimum GPA of 2.8 for semester programs, or 2.6 for summer programs. Students with GPAs slightly below this are still encouraged to apply.

Age: Students must be at least 18 years old by the start of the program. Gap-year, post-grad, and international students are welcome to apply.

These guidelines ensure participants are prepared to engage fully, stay safe, and explore with confidence.
Step 1: Online Application Form
- To access the SFS online application form, you will first create an account on the SFS portal. You can then begin the online application form. Your progress will auto-save as you work through the form and you can log in at any time to continue working where you left off.
- SFS does not charge an application fee.
Step 2: Supplimental Application Items
- A complete application includes the following items which may be submitted in any order. Once your online application form has been submitted and processed, you will have access to a checklist via your SFS portal to track your progress and submit the following items.
Transcript(s)
Send your transcript(s) directly to SFS from any college or university you have attended. Your transcript can be an unofficial version. When we receive your transcript, we will mark it received on your checklist.
Essays
Provide and submit responses to essay questions.
Home School Approval
If you will be enrolled in a college or university during your time abroad with SFS, you will need to obtain approval from your home school’s study abroad office. To do so, complete the SFS Participation Approval Form with the assistance of the study abroad office on your campus.
If you will not be enrolled in a college or university, you will not need to complete this form and should contact us at admissions@fieldstudies.org for more information.
