Application Process

Before Applying

  • Check with your home school for their requirements and deadlines. You should start the conversation with your home school study abroad office to discuss credit transfer, approved programs, financial aid, and any internal application/process.
  • Check the SFS eligibility requirements, which can be found on the Preparing for Departure page.
  • Discuss SFS with your family, friends, pet, coach, and anyone else in your support network.
  • Apply for or renew your passport—it’s good to have even if you don’t study abroad with SFS!
  • Review the costs for your program and learn more about the SFS financial aid process.

Eligibility Requirements

All SFS students must be at least 18 years old by the start date of their program. Gap-year, post-grad, international, and other non-traditional students are welcome to apply.

SEMESTER: one semester of college-level ecology, biology, or environmental science/studies

SUMMER: no course prerequisite

Students must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.8 for semester programs, or 2.6 for summer programs. Students with GPAs slightly below this are still encouraged to apply.

Step 1: Online Application Form

  • To access the SFS online application form, you will first create an account on the SFS portal. You can then begin the online application form. Your progress will auto-save as you work through the form and you can log in at any time to continue working where you left off.
  • SFS does not charge an application fee.

Step 2: Supplimental Application Items

  • A complete application includes the following items which may be submitted in any order. Once your online application form has been submitted and processed, you will have access to a checklist via your SFS portal to track your progress and submit the following items.

Send your transcript(s) directly to SFS from any college or university you have attended. Your transcript can be an unofficial version. When we receive your transcript, we will mark it received on your checklist.

Home School Approval

If you will be enrolled in a college or university during your time abroad with SFS, you will need to obtain approval from your home school’s study abroad office. To do so, complete the SFS Participation Approval Form with the assistance of the study abroad office on your campus.

If you will not be enrolled in a college or university, you will not need to complete this form and should contact us at admissions@fieldstudies.org for more information.
