Even though we have nearly a month of island life under our belts, we still have yet to experience a single dull moment here in the “Big South.” From interactions with the local community to experiencing the gorgeous marine environments in the ocean nearby, we never run out of things to do.

We have recently begun our community outreach programs, where local children from the town come to The SFS Center for Marine Resource Studies on Saturdays to play games, take swimming lessons, and most importantly have a good time. On Wednesdays we travel into the nearby schools to assist with programs being held there (I help with a third grade art class!).

Twice a week we have recreational dives or snorkels, and despite being here so long, I still am amazed that the reefs and sea grasses are in such fantastic shape. One dive group even saw migrating humpback whales underwater!

Our courses have begun to pick up, and we have recently been spending even more time in the water for our field exercises as a result. Unfortunately, this also means that we are gearing up for our midterm exams this week.

At least it’s impossible to become stressed in such an awesome place!
