First Impressions of SFS Turks & Caicos Islands

Turks and Caicos Islands

Why did you choose to study abroad with SFS?
I decided to study abroad with SFS because I wanted a program that fit my major as well as meet my interests of water resources and availability. I also liked that this program allowed students to study directly in the field and interact with the community. This program seemed really well-rounded and truly integrated their students in field research.

What are you first impressions of the country?
When first arriving to South Caicos, the island seemed really reserved in comparison to Providenciales. It seemed like the kind of island where locals would raise their families and was not inundated with tourists.

What are you first impressions of the field station?
I was in complete awe when first arriving to the field station. The entire center is open with a wonderful view of the ocean. Prior to arriving, I did not have any expectations of how the center would look, but once I stepped on the field station for the first time I couldn’t believe that I had finally arrived.

What do you think the biggest challenge will be for you this semester both academically and culturally?
Academically, the hardest challenge will be time management. In addition to classes, field research and community outreach, I hope to be able to explore the town further in order to enrich my experience and learn the local culture here.

I think adjusting to a new culture would be difficult to anyone. Personally, I want to pick up the societal norms of the island, such as how the locals interact with one another, participate in different events on the island and get to know the locals on a personal level.

What are you looking forward to the most about the semester?
I’m looking forward to beginning the Directed Research in the program. It will be my first field research experience, so I’m really excited to begin that process.

Give three words that best describe how you are feeling right now.
Excited, Curious, Grateful
