Work Has Begun!
The damage caused by Hurricanes Irma and Maria in the Turks and Caicos was substantial, but the team on the ground here is amazing. SFS staffers are putting in long hours in the sun to clean up the Center (no leaves on the trees means no shade!).
We finally got power, and soon after that, we got running water. Unfortunately, our cistern is full of debris so we still cannot make water until that is cleaned out. Fences are being restored and the pool was drained. Tanks, pumps, and generators were shipped from SFS headquarters. We are still waiting on quotes from contractors and our insurance agent to start the process on fixing roofing, windows, and other structural elements.
The public dock was destroyed, and we have been in conversations with an engineer who provided some feedback on how to proceed. The boats are damaged but back on their trailers. They will need work to get them seaworthy again.
Two truckloads of donations from the TCI Red Cross arrived on South this week, and they were taken to community distribution centers that have been set up on the island.
I want to thank each and every one of you who has made a donation! So far, we have raised $28,000 for our rebuilding efforts and for community relief and recovery. There is a still a lot to do, but with your support, we will have our program running by this summer and help our host community of South Caicos get back on its feet.
