We are on the horizon of a generational change. Nearly everyone in college is a part of what is known as ‘Generation Z’. I like to call us the environmentally friendly generation. From vegans to climate activists, we have it all. Our generation is paving the way for an eco-friendly future. Here at the School for Field Studies’ Center in the Turks and Caicos, we are paving our way through marine conservation. We spend our days learning and researching about the importance of protecting marine ecosystems. By taking our lectures to the field, we are able to learn firsthand about the things we only see in textbooks back home. After the program we can bring this knowledge back with us and help influence our home institutions or local governments to take action to protect our oceans.

It is well known that college students are among the most influential people in society. We influence music, clothing and food trends. But we also hold protests and strikes and push for political reformation. We have the power to decide how our oceans will look in the future. By studying abroad, students are able to expand their horizons beyond the classroom and understand why it is so important that we push for a change in the way we treat our oceans.

No matter what major you are seeking, studying abroad with the School for Field Studies is a great idea. This program gives students the opportunity to do more than just research, it helps foster interconnectedness with nature and provides a once-in-a-lifetime experience to dive deeper into marine conservation.
