Profile
I am currently in my 11th year of teaching 9th grade science and astronomy at The Milton Hershey School in Hershey PA. This is my 15th year of teaching overall as I taught science in alternative education programs in Philadelphia for 4 years prior to moving to Hershey. I have taught science in nature centers and museums as well, prior to teaching in the classroom. In addition to teaching high school science, I also coach our high school boys and girls cross country teams. I have four children ages 18 months to 11 years. I enjoy birding and running and have completed 17 full marathons. I look forward to reconnecting with SFS and to meeting fellow alumni as we celebrate the impact that SFS had on our journeys!
Favorite SFS Takeaway: I really appreciated when our professors asked us at the end of our summer, “what will you do with what you have learned?” I took that question to heart and ran with it. When I arrived back on my college campus for my senior year, I thought about what legacy I would leave behind. I realized that I could start the conversation on my campus about being more sustainable.
To do that I started a series of what I called Sustainability Talks. These Talks covered a wide range of topics including sustainable food practices (composting, growing some of our own food, etc…), recycling and waste management, energy efficiency in the various buildings on campus, and others.
It was my month in Costa Rica with SFS, living on a sustainable farm that helped me realize that sustainability on my college campus was not only doable, it was/is absolutely necessary! Not long after I graduated, my college began an entire sustainability initiative and even started The Center for Sustainability and the Environment. I like to think that I played a small role in building the momentum toward a more sustainable Albion College!
