Profile

Christopher James is an artist, writer and exhibition curator. His artwork has been exhibited in New York at The Kitchen, Brooklyn Museum, the Whitney Museum at Altria, SAUCE; Internationally at the Museo San Telmo, San Sebastian, Magasin 3, Stockholm and Gasworks, London as well as numerous sites and galleries in Los Angeles, most recently at LTD Gallery and a solo exhibition at the Armory in Pasadena.

He has been published in The Believer, Cabinet, artUS, and X-TRA Journal of Contemporary Art, where he has written about the unique conditions of art production in Southern California. In addition to running an ongoing residential campus of artists in Los Angeles, he is the Co-founder of Forest Island Project, an artist residency in Mammoth Lakes California, organized the 9th annual SASIC (Surfing, Arts, Science, and Issues) conference at Scripps Institute, La Jolla, and assisted in the formation of the High Desert Test Sites in Joshua Tree, California.

He was educated at Colgate University, Hamilton, New York, and the San Francisco Art Institute and was awarded a Joan Mitchell grant to attend the residency program at the Atlantic Center for the Arts. In 2010 he produced artwork as a guest of the Hotchalpine Forschungsstation Jungfraujoch, a high-altitude research station located at 11,400 feet in the Swiss Alps.

Favorite SFS Memory: Living in the research station. I translated the experience into creating artist residencies in various field research stations later on as an artist.
