First Impressions of Costa Rica

Costa Rica

As the Spring 2019 SFS students begin to settle into their new homes around the world, we asked them to share their impressions of the experience so far. Ben Lefkowitz had this to say about SFS Costa Rica:

Why did you choose to study abroad with SFS?
I chose SFS because it was the perfect mix of exposing me to a new culture with a structured school program. It also had a good combination of most of my interests while giving me an excellent way to leave my comfort zone.

What are your first impressions of the country?
That it is a wonderful and gorgeous place that has a lot of environmentalism built into the culture. Costa Rica a country that is quickly growing and becoming more environmentally friendly but still has a lot of work to do to make it as great as it can be. I have not been here long, but I am already falling in love.

What are your first impressions of the field station?
A place that very quickly became home. It was more beautiful than I was expecting, with lots of places to study in. I love how the campus is small enough to get anywhere quickly but big pretty enough to feel like I am walking through a jungle farm to get to breakfast each day. The fact that I can pick fruit to eat on my walk to class is one of my favorite parts.

What do you think the biggest challenge will be for you this semester, both academically and culturally?
I feel that academically the biggest challenge will be keeping up with the readings in such a busy schedule. I think culturally the biggest challenge will be the language barrier.

What are you looking forward to the most about the semester?
I am looking forward to getting to know the country much better and bonding with my cohort.

Give three words that best describe how you are feeling right now.
Thankful, Amazed, Grateful
