First Impressions of SFS Australia

Why did you choose to study abroad with SFS?
I chose to study abroad with SFS because it offered me the opportunity to study abroad in the field and not only take classes that pertain to my major, but also conduct meaningful research that I can bring back and show everyone. I also loved that there was a program in Australia because that has always been my dream destination, not to mention we can study tree kangaroos which are my favorite animal.

What are you first impressions of the country?
The country is so beautiful. After learning a bit about its geography, it is so cool to see how diverse the different landscapes are here and the people are just so friendly. It is also very hot here, but the rain and the cool nights help with that.

What are you first impressions of the field station?
The field station is just as I imagined it. The field station is so quaint with its classroom, outdoor eating area, and cool little lounge that is so cozy. The trail leading up to our cabins is filled with wildlife and every walk yields a new surprise. It is even cooler going to sleep and waking up to the sound of the tropical rainforest.

What do you think the biggest challenge will be for you this semester both academically and culturally?
It is hard to say. I don’t think I will have any cultural struggles due to the similarity between my own and the fact the people here are so understanding and kind. The only one I foresee is the immense work load that I will be faced with in the classes but that should not be a big problem with the hands-on classes, ample time to complete assignments, and the overall disconnect with communication that will help me to stay focused on my work.

What are you looking forward to the most about the semester?
Everything! The classes where we get to learn while out in the field, the trips to various places in Australia to experience the culture, the research opportunities with the professors, and the chance to get bond with 25 other brilliant and fascinating students that I am here with.

Give three words that best describe how you are feeling right now.
Elated, Ecstatic, Enthusiastic
