First Impressions of SFS Costa Rica

Costa Rica

Why did you choose to study abroad with SFS?
I have always jumped at the opportunity to travel.  Due to my past military experiences and travel, I welcome every chance I get to see the world.  SFS not only gives me that opportunity but it also give me the chance to interact with the locals and do hands-on research while learning about the environment.  Let’s not forget the chance to meet new people from all over the place!

What are you first impressions of the country?
Hot!  It is the complete opposite climate that I came from.  For weeks before I left it had been snowing and below freezing.  With the weather what it was, I wore warmer clothes to the airport.  My pants and fleece were fine flying from DC to Houston but once I arrived in Costa Rica I immediately shed some layers.  If I remember correctly it was around 90 degrees when we landed.  Costa Rica reminds me of certain countries in Africa that I have traveled to; the whole feeling that comes with this culture is warming.

What are you first impressions of the field station?
At first I was a little overwhelmed with everything at the Center, but after getting the tour of the station I noticed that everything was well organized and structured.  After seeing this I wasn’t as nervous because everyone around seemed to be very friendly and willing to help out with anything.

What do you think the biggest challenge will be for you this semester both academically and culturally?
One of the biggest challenges could be the language barrier.  I know a minimal amount of Spanish so this could be difficult, but there’s no better place to learn!  The second could be the research project.  I’m probably just saying this due to the fact that I’m not exactly sure what I’ll be doing, but research projects can always be stressful.

What are you looking forward to the most about the semester?
I love the outdoors, which is another reason I decided to do this program.  With this program I get to go on a lot of trips and hikes and be outside.  Anything that has to do with the outdoors is great for me; that’s why I’m a Geo-environmental studies major.

Give three words that best describe how you are feeling right now.
Excited, Intrigued, Lucky
