Why did you choose to study abroad with SFS?
I chose to study abroad with SFS because it was the only program I found that focused solely on sustainable development – an issue that I am very passionate about. I also was attracted to all the field trips the program takes students on to complement what we learn in the classroom. Lastly, I wanted an opportunity to work closely with professors on a research project.

What are your first impressions of the country?
The country is a sea of green lushness! I am endlessly fascinated looking out the window on our bus rides and observing the way Costa Ricans live both in the city and the country-side. This country is so diverse and there are endless landscapes to explore! The beach, the tropical rainforest, the volcanoes, and the dry forests each make up unique biomes that include thousands of interesting birds, insects and mammals.

What are your first impressions of the field station?
I can’t believe that the field station is where I am going to be living for the next three months. From the hammocks that one can lay in looking out on hills beyond, to the pool, soccer field, orange and mango orchard, and farm animals we share the land with, I feel so incredibly lucky to live here! I am looking forward to sharing this space with our incredibly intelligent professors, support staff, and 30 other awesome students!

What do you think the biggest challenge will be for you this semester both academically and culturally?
I think my biggest challenge will be speaking Spanish. I really want to get to know the people that live outside of the SFS community, and it is sometimes intimidating to speak to locals with my very limited vocabulary! However I have already found that Costa Ricans are just happy to hear me put effort into speaking their language, and as I learn more every day I am becoming more comfortable. In terms of academics, I don’t know how I’m going to balance studying with all the incredible adventures and opportunities Costa Rica has to offer!

What are you looking forward to the most about the semester?
I am looking forward to creating friendships with the other SFS students, learning from the professors at the Center, and exploring the country as much as possible.
