Why did you choose to study abroad with SFS?
I chose to study abroad with SFS because of the location of the program and the program itself. There are not too many programs out there that offer courses specifically geared to wildlife management, and what better place to learn about wildlife management than Tanzania! The program also seemed to be all about hands-on learning and learning in the field, which, I believe, is the best way to learn.

What are your first impressions of the country?
Beautiful. Even though our plane arrived at night I knew I was where I was supposed to be. The breeze welcomed us like an old friend. There’s something very special about traveling through the little town you’ll be living in for 4 months and being welcomed with smiles and waves from the locals. The weather is also amazing!

What are your first impressions of the field station?
The field station was definitely bigger than expected and the location is absolutely beautiful. It was a lovely surprise to drive into the field station and see the staff line up with bells on to meet all 30 of us. The bandas were also much bigger than expected and are very comfortable. I really love how close everything is in the station as well.

What do you think the biggest challenge will be for you this semester both academically and culturally?
The biggest challenge academically will definitely be one of my classes, Economic Policy. It’s not a class I would usually take, but then again study abroad is all about stepping out of your comfort zone. Culturally my biggest challenge will probably be getting used to all the stares and getting used to the bustle of the markets.

What are you looking forward to the most about the semester?
I am really looking forward to exploring everything this country has to offer including the meeting and talking to the people, who have been nothing but welcoming and friendly.

Fortunate. Amazed. Grateful.
