First Impressions of SFS Tanzania
Why did you choose to study abroad with SFS?
My school didn’t offer a study abroad program in East Africa and there weren’t many program options related to my environmental major. I also really liked the Directed Research component integrated into the SFS program and how our field work would contribute to community management initiatives.
What are your first impressions of the country?
Tanzania is extremely rugged, but there’s a simplistic beauty in the landscape and people that’s often missing back home in the US.
What are your first impressions of the field station?
There’s definitely more space at the field station than I expected. The station layout allows plenty of room for outdoor activities, especially volleyball. Also, the bandas are well furnished with bunk beds and a sizable bathroom.
What do you think the biggest challenge will be for you this semester both academically and culturally?
Academically, I haven’t taken many natural science classes, so some of the field work might be a challenge. Also, since we have such a beautiful campus and the weather’s ideal for relaxing outside, it’ll be difficult to balance work and free time. From a cultural perspective, I’m nervous about communicating with locals and fully grasping Swahili.
What are you looking forward to the most about the semester?
Without a doubt, the five day expedition in Serengeti National Park. I can’t wait to see the wildlife and actually spend a solid chunk of time out in the field.
