First Impressions of Tanzania
As the Spring 2019 SFS students begin to settle into their new homes around the world, we asked them to share their impressions of the experience so far. Liv Lowell had this to say about SFS Tanzania:
Why did you choose to study abroad with SFS?
I chose to study with SFS in Tanzania because I wanted a program that combined my love for animals and the environment with my love for traveling and a desire to immerse myself in a culture that is completely different than my own. I wanted more than what a traditional study abroad experience could offer me. SFS and being in Tanzania provides that in so many ways.
What are your first impressions of the country?
Tanzania is breathtaking, and people in Rhotia are so welcoming! You really have to be here to understand the love and beauty that surrounds you. Strangers stop strangers just to shake their hands and greet each other. Everyone seems so happy, the wildlife is so diverse, and THE SOUNDS at night and in the mornings are so comforting.
What are your first impressions of the field station?
We’ve only been at the Center for a week and it feels like I’m at a summer camp with my best friends. Being surrounded by people with the same interests and drive, with professors and staff who are so knowledgeable and friendly is such a fulfilling experience.
What do you think the biggest challenge will be for you this semester, both academically and culturally?
The biggest challenge will definitely be balancing the school work with everything else there is to see and do here.
What are you looking forward to the most about the semester?
I’m looking forward to getting better at Swahili so I can get to know some of the locals in the neighboring communities. And of course, the safaris!
Give three words that best describe how you are feeling right now.
