Life on South Caicos

Turks and Caicos Islands

It has been around 50 days since we first stepped onto South Caicos, but it feels like a lifetime. Every day we learn more and more about the past, the present, and the future of South Caicos. We are invested in South Caicos because to us this has become our home, and we are only halfway done with our stay here.

We have learned the names of more than 140 organisms that inhabit these waters, both common and scientific. We snorkel and dive, trying to catch a glimpse of any and every organism we could possibly imagine. We have watched spotted eagle rays jump out of the water, and nurse sharks sleep under crevices. We have watched barracudas change color when stalking their prey and spiny lobsters scurry across the ocean floor at night.

We have learned how to play dominoes and pool the way the locals do and we have tasted the island specials—from conch fritters at Daryl’s to red snapper at our center, from chicken and fries at Leah’s Chicken Bar to $1 ice cream at Marva’s. We have learned a lot of the locals’ nicknames and they have given some of us our own.

Every day we wake up in hopes of an adventure, and every night we fall asleep knowing we are getting a one-of-a-kind experience.
