SFS Establishes Scholarship for Students of Peruvian Heritage

Peru

Today, The School for Field Studies (SFS), the U.S.’s largest environmental study abroad program for college undergraduates, announced the establishment of a new scholarship supporting students of Peruvian descent. The Peruvian-American Scholarship, part of SFS’s Heritage Scholarship program, supports students of Peruvian heritage who enroll in “Biodiversity and Development in the Amazon,” SFS’s semester-length environmental study abroad program in Peru.

Introduced last September, Biodiversity and Development in the Amazon is a semester length environmental study abroad program based in the Madre de Dios region of Peru. This unique field-based academic program explores the balance of conservation and development across this productive region of South America and its rich diversity of cultures.

Biodiversity and Development in the Amazon is operated in the fall and spring semesters each year, and offers an opportunity for undergraduate students to work with SFS faculty hands-on in the forests, fields, communities, and rivers along the elevational gradient from the Andes Mountains to the lowland Amazon rainforest. Students receive 18 semester hours of academic credit. The term culminates with a directed research project in which the students design and carry out environmental field work, then present their findings to local communities in the region.
