Last week, the students, staff, and interns of The SFS Center for Marine Resource Studies (CMRS) participated in the Ted Mullin “Hour of Power” relay! The relay is to honor Carleton College swimmer Ted Mullin, who passed away from sarcoma in fall of 2006. Money raised from this event goes to support sarcoma research, a rare soft-tissue cancer. To honor Ted Mullin, the theme of the relay is “leave it in the pool” where swimmers participate in a continuous relay, leaving every last drop of energy in the pool, or in our case, the ocean!

I’ve swam in the hour of power relay the past two years at my home school, Clark University, and was thrilled that I would have the opportunity to swim it while abroad. For the third year in a row, the South Caicos Dragons of the Sea participated as one of 155 swim teams and one of four study abroad teams to swim in the relay.

We swam our relay a little differently, adding some island style into it!  We swam relays with noodles, kickboards, life jackets, and while holding a conch shell out of the water.  A great time was had by all and we definitely left it all in the ocean!  We were all exhausted from swimming and cheering our hearts out.  We celebrated after watching a beautiful sunset over our swim zone while eating delicious cupcakes our interns made for us.
