The Challenge Ahead

Greetings from sunny South Caicos! A month into my lectureship at the Center for Marine Resource Studies I can really see why SFS chose to locate here. There is absolutely no doubting South’s marine resource, which rivals the Coral Triangle for biodiversity and quality of reef. However, it is also evident that there are a great number of social and economic challenges the island must overcome if the culture and ecology of the island are going to be sustained going forward.
Fortunately, it is clear that not only do we have a staff and student body that are excited about the challenge ahead, but that we also have a local community who are approaching us with their own ideas for sustainable living. For instance, the seafood processing plants on the island have already given us some great ideas for new research that can be performed to measure the health of the island’s queen conch and lobster fisheries. I can’t wait to partner with them on future research, and I hope to update you with a progress report soon.
