Earlier this semester, SFS Peru journeyed to Wayqecha Biological Station, on the edge of Manu National Park, to learn about bear conservation. SFS’ Dr. Mark Bowler put together a video of the trip – check it out below!

Dr. Bowler and his students set up camera traps in the hopes of capturing footage of some bears as they foraged for protein-rich bromeliads. Although the bears appeared to be a bit camera-shy, the group was in luck – local bear expert, Karina Vargas Serrano, was able to capture some great video and photographic evidence of the bears’ wanderings. She explained that she uses the footage as part of her research on human-bear conflicts, to verify claims of crop destruction and cattle killings by the bears.

Students and staff alike concluded that the trip was a great success, and the group plans to return next semester.
