Faculty Profile

Jean-Christophe Diepart is a Belgian geo-agronomist based in Cambodia since 2002. He has been involved in various research projects looking at agrarian changes in lowland and upland regions of Cambodia and in the Mekong region as a whole. He looks into these transformations through the experiences of smallholder farmers whom he considers to be key development actors. His research has three main themes: 1) the transformation of smallholder activity systems and their integration within agricultural commodities value chains, 2) Land relations between peasants, market actors, and the State, and 3) the making of post-war territories in the north-western uplands of Cambodia. Research Interests

At SFS Cambodia, JC’s Direct Research projects revolve around:

  • Agroecological transition. Looking at the contribution of Participatory Guarantee System certification (PGS) to the livelihoods of smallholder farmers in Siem Reap province.
  • Multi-functional management of natural resources. Looking at the evolution of farming and fisheries activities in the Tonle Sap floodplain of Siem Reap province.
