Faculty Profile

From 1995 to 2012 Riccardo has been researcher at the University of Florence, Economic Sciences Department carrying out research on ecological and agricultural economics and policy and, teaching the course “Agro-environmental and Rural Development Policy”. In 2001-2004 Riccardo, on behalf of IUCN Regional Office for Europe, acted as IUCN Scientific Co-ordinator of the EU’s project “Definition of a Common European Analytical Framework for the Development of Local Agri-environmental Programmes for Biodiversity and Landscape Conservation”, (AEMBAC). In 2006-2008, he was IUCN lead researcher in the EU’s project “Governance and Ecosystem management for Biodiversity Conservation” (GEMCONBIO). In 2010-2011 Riccardo has collaborated in the EU study on “Measuring the social awareness of agricultural landscape: indicator scale and issues” coordinated by the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission. In 2013-2015 he was external expert advisor in the EU’s project “Mapping of Ecosystems and their Services in the EU and its Member States” (MESEU) coordinated by Alterra. From 2016 to 2021, Co-Director of the study abroad program in Italy of the High Education Consortium for Urban Affairs (HECUA), Minnesota, USA and Professor for the course “Economics of sustainable food production in contemporary Europe”. Recently he has been a Lead Author for the European and Central Asia (ECA) Regional Assessment, of the Intergovernmental science-policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) promoted by UNEP in collaboration with UNESCO, FAO and UNDP.
