First Impressions of SFS Turks & Caicos Islands

Turks and Caicos Islands

Why did you choose to study abroad with SFS?
I chose to study abroad with SFS because of the great research opportunities that are offered on a regular basis through this program. SFS in Turks & Caicos is unique to other programs because of the wide variety of biodiversity available to study in the area and the methods in which research is able to be conducted.

What are you first impressions of the country?
I was instantly surprised with my surroundings the moment after stepping off the plane in South Caicos, the airport was this tiny little building that employed about three people!  After touring the island a bit more, we found that all of the islanders were very excited to have our company, which was refreshing and unexpected.

What are you first impressions of the field station?
In my opinion, the field station was actually the fanciest looking building on the island!  The contents of the field station surpassed what I had imagined it to be like in my head.  I felt like I was attending a mix between summer camp and a beach resort.

What do you think the biggest challenge will be for you this semester both academically and culturally?
I believe the biggest challenge academically will be to set aside enough time each day for my studies.  There are so many exciting things going on around the field station/town with other students and islanders that it may become a distraction.  Culturally, I hope to meet a large majority of the islanders and develop connections around the community.

What are you looking forward to the most about the semester?
I am mostly looking forward to conducting our Directed Research later in the semester and getting involved with various different types of field work.  I am especially excited to go on “turtling” trips and hopefully have the opportunity to see migrating whales and work with sharks.

Give three words that best describe how you are feeling right now.
Excited, nervous, dirty
