PADI Scuba Certification

PADI SCUBA CERTIFICATION*

SCUBA diving is a valuable skill for students who are interested in pursuing a career or future studies in field research of marine ecosystems. If students wish to dive during the SFS program, they must have their Open Water certification. Students can either complete that certification at home prior to the start of their program, or the Center offers PADI Open Water Diver certification and PADI Advanced Open Water Diver certification courses during both the semester and summer programs. We offer these certification courses to make diving more accessible students who want to become certified, but have limited options on their home campuses or in their home cities.

The Open Water Diver course, taught by the Center’s Dive Safety Officer and assisted by PADI Divemasters, introduces students to diving and the environment where they will be learning and researching. The Advanced Open Water Diver course helps students build confidence and expand their SCUBA skills through different Adventure Dives. PADI courses are offered at an additional cost, and details about the course(s) offered during each session will be available 2-3 months prior to the start date. Students are not required to SCUBA and may choose to snorkel only.
